Iron City featured some time-traveling ghosts on Wednesday as Stephen Sanchez and the Moon Crests came down for the second time this year. This is Sanchez’s first appearance in Birmingham since his new album, Angel Face, was released in September. Sanchez was supported by modern day crooner, Stephen Day.

Chris Stapleton - Higher

The Boston native punk/hardcore band transformed their sound into slowcore/emo and never looked back. The album is an underground masterpiece of the fledging slowcore genre and is one of Karate’s most popular albums. “There Are Ghosts” and “The Same Stars” are in Karate’s top three most streamed songs. It marks a shift in Karate’s identity from sound to members and perfectly leads into their most ambitious album, Unsolved.

Seven-time Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter John Mayer made his second trip to Atlanta in 2023 on his solo tour. The tour is the first time Mayer’s done a tour without a band. Mayer had previously performed at State Farm Arena in March with Joy Oladokun opening for him. After a successful spring tour, Mayer decided to come back to ATL in the fall, this time with singer-songwriter JP Saxe opening.

On their first trip to our nearby Atlanta, Geese delivered another one of the iconic live shows to an audience of around 200. Having gained some serious mainstream traction with their latest and most acclaimed LP, 3D Country, this could be one of the last shows the band plays in a small venue for quite some time. After the 3D Country Tour, the band will go on to play over a dozen shows opening for Greta Van Fleet, one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment, on their 2024 tour. With this opportunity in the spotlight, the band is sure to catapult into a more serious and well deserved higher realm of popularity, so I felt quite fortunate to see them at such an intimate location.

Empty Country - Empty Country II

A wave crashes onto the dark sand. The empty train tracks divide the houses in the english countryside. Lines of snow run through a field, making it look like a maze. A tree clings its withered branches onto a house. These are all visuals that Jack Cooper shot for his short film for the album Island of Noise.

On October 31st, 2020, Daniel Dumile, aka MF DOOM, passed away at 49. He left behind one of the most prolific discographies of anyone in the hip-hop world. With 13 studio albums between solo and collaborative projects, the DOOM universe is expansive and deep. This doesn’t even count the 10 instrumental albums Dumile released under the pseudonym “Metal Fingers.” Trying to sum up DOOM’s career in one article is heresy, but I’m just going to try to do my best to celebrate the life of DOOM and the wonderful music he made over his 32-year career.

As soon as I approached the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, I was immediately met with all manner of eccentric characters anxiously awaiting to see Death Grips. The Sacramento-based experimental hip-hop group has gained a cult following who is well known for being outlandish and “in your face”, much like the band itself. They were founded by vocalist MC Ride (Stefan Burnett), drummer Zach Hill, and keyboardist Andy Morin. Morin parted with the band earlier this year, and thus many synth portions of the band’s catalog were replaced with guitar accompaniment from Nick Reinhart.
