The evening of September 19, 2025 brought music and local cheer to the John Emerald Distillery in Opelika, Alabama. Lawndog, Another Michael and Boyscott played the cozy stage in an event supporting Aubfest, a local music and arts festival taking place this week.
Lawndog’s music, attitude and stage presence took me back to my freshman year. Their covers of indie songs and the sense of community the band members created was a nostalgia shot to the crowd, which grew and grew due to Lawndog gaining recognition in the scene.

They played Loretta, incorporating the quirky phone-mic once again which gave the whole set a playful energy. This rendition of Loretta was able to provide more of a rock vibe out of a lofi pop song. Lawndog’s decision to do this was well received by the crowd. Out of their limited set list; this was the most noteworthy song from the group.
Bringing this band to the distillery was an amazing choice and encompassing what local art showcases should be.
Another Michael came on after Lawndog, walking onto the stage and feeling if just a bit out of place. The band from Philadelphia was unknown to the crowd, and the slower emo folk was an clashing change of pace. They have released a total of three albums available on most platforms.

They brought a different sound to the Auburn-Opelika scene compared to what is usually the go-to, and the crowd will no doubt need some time to warm up.
Finally, the act of the night stepped under the lights, Boyscott. They played their recently released hit album “Goose Bumps.” Two songs that got the crowd moving was their hits: Nova Scotia 500 and Blonde Blood. These songs brought a soft indie rock style that helped excite the crowd after Another Michael.
Boyscott felt like coming home, as if it was a cannon event in everyone’s experience to sit at a small distillery and listen to a hidden gem of a band, then go home and catalogue it as a religious experience for story times to come.
Boyscott continued their fall tour coming from the Northeast of the United States with a notable stop at the University of Connecticut. Merch for Boyscott included t-shirts, tote bags, physical media of their music. This stop in Opelika was to raise funds for the local arts festival aptly named "Aubfest” which is set to take place from October 3rd to October 5th.

There is something poetic about indie bands such as these coming out to play their music. They keep the spirit of college music alive and events like this are what make the scene in Auburn worth a while.
