Auburn softball gears up for in-state showdown against Samford

As the Auburn softball team (16-11-1) gears up for a midweek showdown against in-state rival Samford (9-24), anticipation is building for what promises to be an electrifying clash at Jane B. Moore Field.

Auburn head coach Mickey Dean emphasized the significance of facing an in-state opponent, highlighting the competitive nature of such matchups.

"It doesn't matter who it is, those games are always competitive," Dean said. "We have to be ready and play hard. Samford can put runs on the board. It's not going to be easy. It never is."

The Tigers are riding high after a landmark victory over No. 4 Tennessee, snapping the Volunteers' 20-game win streak with a 4-1 triumph. The win marked Coach Dean's 700th Division I victory, adding another milestone to his illustrious career.

Samford, fresh off a series win at Wofford, poses a formidable challenge for Auburn. However, history favors the Tigers, who boast a commanding 17-6 lead in the all-time series, including a dominant 10-game winning streak. Notably, seven of those victories came in shutout fashion.

Adding to Auburn's strength is pitcher Maddie Penta, a force to be reckoned with in the circle. Penta boasts an impressive record at Jane B. Moore Field, with a 21-4 record since the 2023 season, supported by a 1.05 earned run average and nine shutouts. Her stellar performance has propelled her to third in the nation with 138 strikeouts and fourth in shutouts.

Offensively, transfer duo Anna Wohlers and Amelia Lech continue to shine, providing a potent combination of power and consistency. Together, they have contributed significantly to Auburn's success, tallying 29 runs scored, 37 hits, 35 RBI, and 18 extra-base hits through the first 28 games.

Also making waves is KK McCrary, who showcased her prowess against her former team, recording five hits in the Tennessee series, including two home runs and a triple. McCrary's standout performance underscores Auburn's depth and versatility in the lineup.

As Auburn prepares to take on Samford, the team remains focused on maintaining their winning streak and delivering a memorable performance for fans on Taylor Swift Night. With talent, determination, and a home-field advantage, the Tigers are poised for another thrilling victory in front of their loyal supporters.

First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. CT, on SEC Network+. In addition, coverage will be available on WEGL 91.1 FM and the Auburn Sports Network with Brit Bowen and Micah Farmer.
