Tigers best Huskies, win rubber game

AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn Tigers (9-2) beat the UConn Huskies (3-6) 8-2 Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park to secure the series win. Ike Irish had a pair of homers that helped push the Tigers by the Huskies.

Auburn started fast, scoring three runs in the first inning. Bobby Peirce walked and Cooper McMurray singled with two outs to get Deric Fabian to the plat. Fabian hammered it over the fence in left to get the Tigers an early lead that they would never relinquish.

The Huskies applied pressure by way of a Matt Malcolm solo home run in the second inning and a Luke Broadhurst single that plated Paul Tammaro to get the score to 3-2 Auburn. UConn’s offense would load the bases two more times, but Auburn’s pitching, with help from a great throw from Peirce to Irish to tag a runner out at home, kept the Huskies off the board the rest of the game.

Tigers catcher Ike Irish hit his fourth and fifth home runs of the season in the sixth and eighth innings respectively, both two run blasts that brought Mason Maners home.

The Huskies’ pitching struggled yet again allowing eight runs across eight pitchers. The Tigers, on the other hand, had a great showing on the mound. Starter Carson Myers went 4.0 innings and allowed one earned run. Reliever Cam Tilly got the win, also going 4.0 innings and allowing just one earned run. Will Cannon closed the game for the Tigers, getting out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Jake Studley to end the game.

No spring break for the Tigers, as they turn their focus to a two-game midweek series with Air Force on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will look to add to their impressive start to the season.
