Peirce and Gonzalez lead Auburn to series victory over Eastern Kentucky

AUBURN, Ala. – No. 15 Auburn displayed dominance at Plainsman Park, securing a crucial series victory against Eastern Kentucky with a convincing 6-1 win. Spearheaded by the dynamic performances of Bobby Peirce at the plate and Joseph Gonzalez on the mound, the Tigers showcased their depth and resilience in a commanding display.

Peirce emerged as a standout offensive force, delivering clutch hits throughout the game to ignite Auburn's scoring drive. The graduate's early two-RBI triple set the tone for the Tigers' offensive onslaught, while his subsequent solo homer underscored his impact, resulting in a career-high three RBIs for the game. Peirce's contributions proved vital in rallying the team and securing the series win.

“There’s always those first-game jitters,” Peirce said. “We got a win yesterday, but today felt like we played the game a little better. That was a good win.”

Auburn head coach Butch Thompson commended Peirce's pivotal role in the victory, highlighting the importance of his timely hits in energizing the team. Thompson expressed confidence in Auburn's offensive versatility, emphasizing the potential for different players to step up and contribute when called upon.

Meanwhile, Joseph Gonzalez marked a triumphant return to the mound after a 364-day absence, delivering a stellar pitching performance. Despite initial challenges, Gonzalez showcased composure and control, limiting Eastern Kentucky to just one unearned run on two hits over 5.0 innings. The pitcher's ability to induce crucial double plays thwarted the Colonels' early scoring opportunities, demonstrating his resilience under pressure.

“My command was a little off at first, but it got better throughout the game,” Gonzalez said. “I just kept trusting my defense. They’re the ones making me look good.”

Auburn's pitching staff displayed depth and resilience, with contributions from sophomore southpaw Zach Crotchfelt and junior John Armstrong in relief appearances. The Tigers' defensive prowess was evident with three double plays that halted Eastern Kentucky's offensive momentum.

Offensively, Chris Stanfield complemented Peirce's standout performance with his own impressive showing, tallying two hits, including a triple. Stanfield's consistency at the plate further emphasized the Tigers' offensive depth and firepower.

Looking ahead to the series finale, Auburn aims to maintain its momentum and secure a decisive victory to cap off a successful opening weekend. With a well-rounded roster and contributions from key players, the Tigers are poised for a promising season ahead.

The series finale between Auburn and Eastern Kentucky is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Plainsman Park, offering fans another opportunity to witness the Tigers' competitive spirit in action.
