Arkansas Cruises to 5-0 Victory, Sweeps Auburn to Open SEC Play

The No. 3 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks completed their three-game sweep of the Auburn Tigers today in Fayetteville, winning on Sunday 5-0, and dropping the Tigers to 13-6-1 and 0-3 in SEC play to begin the 2023 season. The Razorbacks continue their 13-game winning streak and improve their record to 18-2 with a 3-0 SEC record.

Jared Wegner kicked things off for the Razorbacks in the third inning, hitting his 10th home run of the season with a three-run shot to put the Razorbacks up 3-0. Harold Coll extended the Razorbacks lead on a two-run single, putting Arkansas up 5-0. The Tigers never threatened the Razorbacks' lead, recording only 3 hits on 29 plate appearances. Arkansas’ Cody Adock had a flawless game, pitching six innings, recording six strikeouts, a walk, one hit allowed, and no earned runs for his second win of the season. Auburn’s Konner Copeland, however, struggled mightily against the Arkansas offense. The senior allowed three hits, three runs, one of which was a three-run homerun, and struck out only two Razorbacks through 2.2 innings. In total, the Razorbacks had 9 hits on 28 plate appearances, and were walked three times as well.

The No. 18 Auburn Tigers were completely outmatched against the Razorbacks in their rematch from the 2022 College World Series. The Tigers' struggles to hit against the Razorbacks pitching carried into Sunday's game, hitting just 3 for 29 at the plate on Sunday (.103 average), and going just 15 for 92 (.163 batting average) in the series, which is well below their season average of .297. The Tigers will look to rebound against the 8-12 South Alabama Jaguars on Tuesday in Montgomery. Next weekend, the Tigers have a three-game series with the 13-7 (0-2 in SEC play) Georgia Bulldogs at Plainsman Park. The Bulldogs were swept and manhandled by the 20-1 South Carolina Gamecocks this past weekend, getting mercy ruled twice in their series. The Razorbacks will look to continue their momentum Tuesday against Southeast Missouri State before a top ten showdown against the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge next weekend.
