From Adelaide to Auburn: Oscar Chapman is Having a Big Season

Auburn, AL - Auburn has had many offensive drives this season that have stalled out around midfield. When that happens, Auburn calls on number 91, Oscar Chapman.

The native of Adelaide, South Australia arrived on the plains in 2020. He replaced Arryn Siposs, another Australian punter who is currently with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Chapman wasted no time showing off what he could do. He appeared in nine out of 11 games his first season, averaging 41 yards per attempt. His season long was 67 yards and he pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line eight times.

2021 was an even bigger year for the Aussie. He appeared in every game and averaged 44.1 yards per attempt. His season long was 65 yards, he pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 23 times and he had 12 punts travel further than 50 yards.

2022 has the potential to be Oscar's biggest season yet. Through five games, he is already averaging 44.1 yards per punt. Additionally, his long for the season has been 61 yards and he has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line seven times. He has sent four punts further than 50 yards at this point.

Chapman's ability to consistently flip the field is one of Auburn's most under appreciated aspects.

"I've been really, really happy. We had a slow start, well I did... But the team is doing really good," Chapman said when asked about the special teams' performance this season. "Keionte (Scott) has been getting lots of return yards against other teams and really helping boost my average."

"Very, very important. We're trying to win the field position battle every single week," Chapman said when asked about the importance of pinning an opponent deep in their own territory. "It's always fun to go against another Aussie, it'll be good competition between me and him."

"It goes back to me trying to get good hang time and good distance and put the ball where coach wants me too... it's also a lot of putting pressure on the returner so he doesn't want to catch the ball against me," Chapman said when asked about the key to having success against returns.

Oscar Chapman continues to prove just how valuable he truly is to this Auburn Tigers Football Team. He will only continue to improve as his time in Auburn goes on.
