No. 20 Auburn "Sweeps" Alabama in weekend series

The No. 20 Auburn Tigers hosted the Alabama Crimson Tide at Plainsman Park this weekend for a three-game series. Auburn came into this one after dropping two out of three games against the No. 3 Arkansas Razorbacks at home last weekend and beating the Troy Trojans 11-4 on the road Tuesday night. Alabama came into this series after losing two out of three games to the No. 19 LSU Tigers at home last weekend and beating the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 13-6 on the road Tuesday night.

Mason Barnett got the start for Auburn in the first game, Garett McMillan got it for Alabama. Auburn got the series started offensively in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring two. Alabama responded quickly however, tying the game in the top of the sixth off a two-run home run by Drew Williamson. Brooks Carlson hit a double down the right-field line that scored Bobby Pierce and put Auburn up 3-2. Blake Burkhalter came in to nail-down the save in the top of the ninth inning and secure the Auburn win. When asked about his thoughts on the game, head coach Butch Thompson said, “We're so engaged.” He added, “I wish we could go ahead and start a tenth inning or game two of the series.”

Trace Bright got the nod for Auburn in game two, Jacob McNairy got it for Alabama. The Crimson Tide got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Bobby Pierce hit a home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to put Auburn on the board. The Tigers then scored three runs in the bottoms of the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game. Auburn scored two more runs off of throwing errors in the bottom of the seventh inning. Auburn ended up winning 6-4.

The third game would be ruled a no-contest due to weather. Auburn swept the 2022 Iron Bowl of Baseball two games to none.

Auburn will be back in action on Tuesday night as they travel up to Hoover, AL to take on the Samford Bulldogs. Then they travel up to Lexington. KY to take on the Kentucky Wildcats for the final three games of the 2022 regular season.
