Maddie Penta wins SEC Co-Freshman of the week

On Monday, freshman pitcher Maddie Penta was named SEC Co-Freshman of the week after her impressive weekend debut consisting of 13 strikeouts between the two games. She shares the award with Georgia’s Sydney Chambley.

In her first collegiate start, Penta pitched a no-hitter for the Tigers. This is only the 26th no-hitter in the program’s history and the first since 2018. She struck out seven players in the first five innings leading the team to an 8-0 victory over Southeast Missouri.

On Sunday, the Maryland native held Southeast Missouri to just one run with another impressive statistic of six strikeouts. The Tigers won the game 3-1 which finalized a sweep for the weekend.

Throughout the weekend Penta held the Redhawks to a .051 batting average and throughout her 12 innings of play she only allowed one unearned run resulting in a 0.00 earned run average.

The 2-0 Tigers will face a South Carolina team who has yet to play a game this season due to Covid-19 cancellations at the Osprey/Dolphin Invitational Friday at 12 p.m. CST
