University Forces Hockey to Cancel Season

After months of speculation, Auburn Club Hockey has delayed the 2021 season indefinitely in response to University policy. The news broke Sunday afternoon on the team’s social media pages after the Fall season was also postponed back in October.

The cancelation seemed likely after Auburn University suspended in-person classes for Fall ’20 and the beginning of Spring ’21. Fear of the virus altered the seasons of other club sports as well including baseball, swimming, ultimate frisbee, and many others. Behind the decision was the Student Affairs department stating that “it is our desire to get all campus activities back to normal just as soon as it is safe to do so”. Physical distancing was made a priority by Campus Recreation and threatened to suspend teams caught practicing on or off campus. Teams were offered reserved conditioning sessions to participate together and interact as a team, but no equipment would be allowed as it violated guidelines. Hope of any season being played was quickly dismissed following the decision.

The team finished 15-7 last season and placed 4th in the SEC tournament. Auburn Club Hockey plans to return this upcoming Fall when things return to normal. WEGL plans to continue their support of Auburn Hockey and will broadcast all home games scheduled for the 2021/22 season. #WarDamnHockey
