Auburn Soccer Returns To The Plains To Face Tennessee

The Auburn Soccer Team comes home to play Tennessee after a successful road trip. The Tigers claimed their first SEC win of the season on the road, beating Kentucky 2-1 in a comeback overtime triumph.

The Tigers won their game at Kentucky and drew 0-0 at Old Dominion during last week’s road trip. Auburn had a weak first half against the Wildcats, but picked it up in the second half. Kentucky scored in under 4 minutes to get the game started, but a late own goal leveled it, allowing Auburn forward Hailey Whitaker to score in overtime to seal the win. Old Dominion held the Tigers to a scoreless draw in an uneventful match. Old Dominion had won all their home games to that point, so Auburn became the first team to leave Norfolk with a point.

Auburn’s player to watch tomorrow is forward Hailey Whitaker. The Sophomore from Birmingham has scored once, and had a total of 6 shots, in her last 2 games. Tomorrow, she will be looking to add to her goal tally of 2 for the season.

Tennessee are looking to bounce back after a disappointing Sunday night loss at #17 Vanderbilt, giving up a goal in the second half of overtime to end the game 0-1. Tennessee have a strong 5-0-0 home record, but have fallen short on the road with a 1-2-1 away record.

Tennessee’s player to watch tomorrow is Ma Vignola. Vignola struggled in the Vols’ last game against Vanderbilt, but currently has 5 goals on the season and is averaging over 3 shots per game. Half of her shots this season have been on target, so she might cause trouble for Auburn Keeper Kate Hart.

This match marks the 25th time these teams will play with Tennessee leading the series with 11 wins to Auburn’s 9 wins. The last time the teams played each other was 2 years ago which resulted in a 1-1 draw.

Auburn will host Tennessee Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. ct live on WEGL 91.1 FM or weglfm.com.
