Originating around the 1940s, rock music was built on the creativity of African American culture and the popularization of blues musicians like Lead Belly, Muddy Waters, and Howlin’ Wolf. The genre of ‘rock and roll’ was subsequently popularized by geniuses like Elvis and Chuck Berry, who established the guitar as the focus of the genre. Then came bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Velvet Underground, and Pink Floyd who completely changed what rock music meant, and what it sounded like. Ever since the early 70s, rock has been an ever-growing and evolving sphere of musicians and bands constantly finding ways to influence each other and reimagine these influences to create something new. Often, groups end up creating something so new that it needs its own subgenre within rock, such as the punk movement or metal music. Now, rock music is a broad collection of these subgenres that are so different at times it can be hard to relate them at all apart from the fact that most songs are still typically centered around the electric guitar and the standard drum kit.
