WEGL Spotlight: Monday Radio Shows

Whether you are walking downtown, picking up Panda Express before teaching class, or pretending you don’t have an Airpod in as you feign attention in Haley 2370, WEGL is there every day to bring quality programing to your listening ears. Our Monday on-air show’s are filled with old and new faces, bright personalities and a unique look on the student experience. Here are some of our evening shows with WEGLs official stamp of approval for a good time.

The Rotation

This chaotic music show, hosted by the gentle Sam Kennedy and Abby Thompson, is the perfect thing to listen to as you dive into that unfinished-craft drawer you have been eyeing for the better part of a year. It is the smell of chamomile and a nice rock album, and Sam and Abby couldn’t be happier to lay this show on your doorstep every Monday at 3pm.

Abby is a psychology major whose favorite artists are Slaughter Beach Dog, Big Thief and Lorde. Sam is double majoring in psychology and law and justice, her ‘Favorites’ playlist includes most of The 1975s discography.

Every week they come up with a different theme personal to their lives, lately they have been combing through their college years. What was the artists you listened to when you were a first-year student?

I Listen to Everything

If ‘eclectic’ was a radio show, it would be I Listen to Everything. Hosted by Ben Tankersley and Jack Ward, this is a library of genres across the board, from Japanese Midwest emo to the evergreen jazz of Django Reinhardt, I Listen to Everything has it all. You can listen to them every Monday at 6pm, pick a week and you will be pleasantly surprised by a unique selection of tracks.

Ben and Jack operate mostly on physical media, whatever they have on vinyl and CDs is what goes on air. Ben is an industrial and systems engineering major, Jack belongs to the mechanical engineering program. Ben has his musical origins in high school marching bands, Jack’s guitar-playing roots reside in Houston, TX.

Some might be skeptical when first tuning in, but be sure Jack and Ben do indeed, as a matter of fact, listen to everything.

Synesthesia

At Synesthesia, they put sounds to what they see. Camden Awtrey and Andrew Nielsen put their own spin on movie soundtracks and present you with what they think scenes from your favorite films should’ve sounded like. This concept came to them in a hazy night, and here at WEGL, we are so excited they ran with it.

Every Monday at 7pm, they walk you through the story without any spoilers, picking and choosing tracks from their expansive collections and combining them with the existing soundtracks. Yet, Andrew and Camden’s passion for film doesn’t get lost in the music, on-air they talk about characters, tropes and schools of thought that break fanbases apart.

Goodwill Hunting, Blue Velvet, Halloween, should they have had different soundtracks?

The Kitchen

If dance music and original, good beats sound like a fun time, lets add live mixing to make things interesting. Eli, The Kitchen’s host, brings his DJ table to the studio and brings the party to you every Monday at 8pm. He is a junior in computer science and when asked about his favorite artists he listed Feed me Jack, Geese and “anything Jake Ewald has touched.”

He wants to get people moving, believes there is no way to dance incorrectly, and that is why he is so intent in making the rave-feeling accessible.

“Foie Gras, it’s basically a hot dog in that it’s stuffed with random bits but it presents itself as fancy to trick people to get it. Except my show is good. Trust me,” he said when we asked him what his show would be if it was a dish.

In The Kitchen, Eli Standard cooks.
