28 years ago today on April 19th, one of the most important rap albums ever dropped. Emceed by a 20 year old kid from Queens named Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, better known nowadays simply as Nas, Illmatic has gone down as one of the best, if not the best, and most influential hip hop albums to ever come out. It has been poured over, its word studied, its themes discussed and its legacy worshiped by hip hop fans all over the world. So, what makes Illmatic so special?

The Belmont Bruins traveled to the Plains today to take on the Tigers in the Auburn Arena. Auburn was able to add another win to their record, moving to 8-1 overall on the season. Couch Brent Crouch now has more wins than the last two season totals combined.
Since the departure of Auburn one-and-done star Isaac Okoro last year, there has been a lot of discussion about the prospect of the Tigers’ star players leaving within a year of joining the team. With the biggest target of those discussions and worry being current Auburn freshman and star Sharife Cooper. Everyone expected Sharife to be a one-and-done after joining Auburn last year.
Auburn was unable to leave Baton Rouge with a win over SEC rival LSU Tigers today. The Auburn Tigers got utterly dominated after taking a quick lead to open the game as LSU recovered and never looked back. Auburn was only able to end the game leading in two statistical categories, that being blocks and free-throw percentage.
The Auburn Tigers were able to get a dominant win against Kennesaw State last night. Auburn was able to score five goals off great games from five separate players. Only two of those players, Olivia Candelino and Hannah Waesch, played more than 60 minutes of game time. Of those five goals, only one of them came from a non-freshman, that being from veteran player Kori Locksley.
Auburn was able to pull out a tough win against Top 15 ranked Mizzou Tuesday evening. The Auburn Tigers were able to show off the type of team they can be when they get the looks that they want. Tuesday’s win was a showcase from the less lauded players of the team.
Auburn has had a rough start to the season, not only has a worldwide pandemic just about all but taken away Auburn’s home-court ref harassers, “the Jungle,” but an eligibility dispute sat the Tigers best player on the bench for their first 11 games. The Tigers were able to start out 6-2 before quickly falling to .500 a few games later on Sharife’s first collegiate game. That game was against the Crimson Tide and Sharife led or tied for the most in every offensive category, including turnovers. Sharife was able to pour on 26 points, 9 assists, 3 steals in a game that, without Cooper, may have been a much larger loss. Cooper was paramount in keeping the Tigers competitive to the very end, a trait that he has shown all 4 of his games this season, regardless of any growing pains along the way.
The Auburn Tigers have a seemingly easy matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs this weekend with the Bulldogs coming into this week owning a dismal 2-6 record. Despite this record the Bulldogs cannot be counted out so quickly this Saturday. While two of their losses were fumbled away very convincingly, those being the 41 to nothing routing by Alabama and the 24-2 heartbreaker against Kentucky. The rest of their losses have been games decided by one score, with only one being a two score game, that being the 28-14 loss against Texas A&M.
Auburn came into tonights matchup with the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 2-0 and were able to stay undefeated in a great showing on both ends of the floor. With five different Tiger’s scoring double digit points and eight different players recording at least one steal.
Auburn looks to be in a good spot coming off of an unusual three week break. The Tigers essentially got an extended bye week, and one thing fans know about Gus Malzahn is that he is elite coming off of breaks. So far in his head coaching career with the Tigers, Malzahn is an undefeated 9-0, 11-0 if you include his stint with Arkansas State prior to Auburn. The question is if it is simply a fluke or if Malzahn knows how to successfully handle his team during bye weeks.
In the recent Associated Press NCAA Basketball Top 25, there was a noticeable exclusion from the list. The Auburn Tigers who have had a meteoric rise to the spotlight of the College Basketball world has been placed 10 spots outside the Top 25 at number 35 overall. Despite finishing 20th with a 25-6 record overall at the end of the COVID-19 shortened season, Auburn only received eight Top 25 votes. Despite beating both Kentucky and Tennessee last season, both of whom are top 15 this year, Auburn is left with a chip on its shoulder.
Despite a few glimmers into Auburn’s potential complexion under new head coach Brent Crouch, the Tigers were unable to get a season opening victory. The fourth-ranked Florida Gators showed that they belonged in the upper-echelon of SEC volleyball programs and got the sweep against the Tigers tonight.
15th ranked Auburn headed to Columbia to play unranked South Carolina for the first time since 2014, and the first time in William-Brice Stadium since 2011. Despite a late comeback attempt, Auburn was unable to escape with the victory.
It is no secret that Gus Malzahn has a long history with Arkansas. Before Gus became head coach at Auburn he was the offensive coordinator for the Razorbacks in 2006, and played for them from 1984-85 before transferring to Henderson State. However, since he came to Auburn he has had no love for his former team.
The year is 2007, Auburn is ranked 18th after a solid start to the season, the Tigers are traveling to Athens to take on the 10th ranked Bulldogs helmed by Matthew Stafford. The Bulldogs have been rolling so far in the season under Mark Richt, but Auburn may be a dark horse to pull off the upset.
